TOPIC: FAITH FOLLOWS FOCUS
THEME SCRIPTURE: "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith." —Hebrews 12:2
PREPARATORY QUESTION
Right now, what holds more of your attention: your problem or your Savior?
The disciples could hardly believe their eyes. Jesus was walking on the water. Peter asked, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water" (Matthew 14:28). Jesus answered with one word: "Come." Peter stepped out of the boat and walked.
Then he looked around at the wind, the waves, and the dark depths beneath him, and he began to sink. Notice what changed. The storm was raging all along, and Jesus hadn't moved. Only Peter's focus shifted, and his faith followed it.
Faith is not a fixed possession. It rises or falls depending on where you point your attention. Stare at your problems, and they grow louder while your faith shrinks. Fix your gaze on Jesus, and your faith steadies.
You can't always quiet the waves, but you can choose what you watch. So, at all times and under every circumstance, remind yourself of who He is:
- Present: He came to the disciples in the middle of the storm.
- Powerful: The water that threatened Peter held Jesus up.
- Caring: When Peter cried out, Jesus reached for him immediately.
- Willing: He invited Peter out, and He invites you too.
So, beloved, stop auditing your inadequacies. Peter's weakness wasn't what sank him; his distraction was.
Key Takeaway
Your faith grows where your attention rests. Keep your eyes on Jesus, not on your circumstances or your shortcomings.
Today, when worry rises, say one truth about Jesus aloud (present, powerful, caring, or willing) and return your eyes to Him before you respond to the problem.
Remain blessed.
