TOPIC: WHY DID YOU DOUBT

THEME SCRIPTURE "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" (Matthew 14:31, NIV)

PREPARATORY QUESTION
What would you say if Jesus asked you that question today "My child, why are you doubting?

Jesus asked Peter a question, not a verdict. He did not say, "You failed." He said, "Why did you doubt?"

The question is an invitation to think. Peter had just seen Jesus calm his fear, call him out, and hold him up. The evidence was fresh. Yet he doubted anyway.

Jesus was not mocking him. He was pointing at the gap between what Peter had seen and how Peter had responded.

Look at what the question reveals:

- Doubt is not ignorance. Peter knew who Jesus was. He doubted with the facts in front of him.
- Doubt needs a reason to survive. Jesus asks "why" because no good reason exists. Nothing in Jesus' character gave Peter cause to fear. Perhaps Peter might have considered his experience with such boisterous winds.
- Little faith is still faith. Jesus used the word "little," not "none."

Most of us doubt in the same way. We forget what Jesus has already done. We have seen answered prayers, closed doors that protected us instead, and strength that arrived late but arrived. Then a new wave comes, and we act as if He has never helped us.

The cure is memory. Recall His record. Write it down if you must. Peter had just heard "Take courage" and "Come." Those words were enough.

Let the question of the Lord "Why are you doubting" work on you today. Do not answer it with excuses. Answer it with honesty, then follow it up with trust.
